The stamp shown below was issued on 8th June 1983 to commemorate the centenary of St John Ambulance in Australia (1883-1983). It features the badge of the Order of St John, and was designed by Tim McCaulay (Australian artist). Although St John first aid teaching had begun in Australia in 1881, the first establishment of an official St John Ambulance Association Centre occurred in Melbourne in 1883. This commenced with a meeting at Melbourne Town Hall on 13 June 1883, chaired by Dr James Edward Neild.

The first day cover shown below was issued at Crookwell, NSW. It features a St John Ambulance volunteer attending to an injured football player, with a mobile first aid vehicle close behind. Also featured are: a St John Cadet, a first aid competition trophy, and the shoulder flash worn on the uniform in the 1980s. The first day cover was designed by Marg Towt.
