Dr Arthur William Burton KStJ
Eighth Commissioner of St John Victoria District, 1969-1972
Arthur Burton graduated in 1940 and was an intern at The Alfred Hospital in 1941, after which he enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps. He served for five years as a Captain in 18th Field Ambulance in New Guinea. After the war he was in General Practice for twelve years before becoming Deputy Secretary, then Secretary, of the Australian Medical Association Victorian Branch. He also completed an Honours Law degree and was a Lecturer in Medical Ethics at Melbourne University.
From 1948 he was a lecturer and examiner for St John, and a Divisional Surgeon in the Brigade. His ongoing work and promotions within St John saw him as Chairman of Training Branch and member of St John Council in Victoria, and Commissioner of Victoria District for one triennium before promotion to national headquarters as Chief Surgeon. He held that position for seven years until his retirement in 1979. He was invested as a Knight of Grace in the Order of St John in 1972.
