Major-General Jeffrey Victor Rosenfeld AM KStJ

Seventeenth Commissioner of St John Victoria District, 2001-2005

The appointment of Jeffrey Rosenfeld resumed the earlier pattern of military medical men as Commissioner. He was also a long-serving St John member who had risen through the ranks. He had been a cadet at Malvern Division and returned as Divisional Surgeon at Northcote during his medical internship in 1977. After specialty training in the UK and USA he became a neurosurgeon at the Royal Melbourne and Royal Children’s Hospitals, then appointment as Monash University Professor of Surgery, based at the Alfred Hospital.

In the volunteer Army Reserve, he was initially a Medical Officer of the 4/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse (Armoured) Regiment and later, after service in Rwanda, Commanding Officer of 6th Mobile Field Surgical Troop. After further service in Bougainville, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel. Further service in East Timor and Iraq and increased responsibilities saw his appointment as Surgeon General Defence Health Reserves, with the rank of Major General.

Within St John he was appointed Corps Surgeon to Southern Metro Corps before appointment to District staff, then promotion to District Medical Officer prior to his appointment as Commissioner. He served the residual part of Bob Boucher’s triennium and all of his own, before going on Reserve. He continues to contribute to the work of St John whenever practicable.
