Dr Henry Hollister Jackson CStJ
Ninth Commissioner of St John Victoria District, 1972-1974
Harry Jackson was a keen pilot and medical student when WW II broke out. He enlisted in 21 Squadron RAAF but was quickly sent back to Australia to complete his medical course. He continued as a RAAF Medical Officer after his internship. He served in New Guinea and returned to General Practice after the war. He joined St John as a Divisional Surgeon and a lecturer for Training Branch. He became Chairman of Training Branch in Victoria and Deputy Commissioner during the development of the Search & Rescue Service. He was invested as a Commander in the Order of St John in 1969.
Harry became Commissioner in 1972 when Commissioner Arthur Burton was appointed Chief Surgeon at National Headquarters. As an act of succession planning, he appointed Dr Peter Bush, who was Director of the Emergency Department of Royal Melbourne Hospital, as his Deputy. He instigated a reorganisation of the Search and Rescue units and, when this was implemented, he stepped aside to allow Dr Bush to continue as Commissioner.
